On August 7th, the Hefei Shushan Court opened a trail involving the fraudulent sale of masks. The defendant was sentenced to a fixed imprisonment term of 1 year and fined of 5,000 yuan.
In February 2020, during the critical period of the epidemic prevention and control, the accused noticed the shortage of masks on the market, and sprouted an idea to defraud others by pretending to sell masks. He joined WeChat groups of various Hefei communities and repeatedly posted information and pictures of selling N95 and disposable surgical masks . He also copied masks invoices and production qualification certification materials from the Internet to get the trust of his victims.
Some of the WeChat group members believed that the information was true and transferred money to an account designated by the fraudster via WeChat payment. Upon receiving the payments , he immediately blocked the victims and severed contacts with them.
On July 17, the defendant was arrested and dragged to court.
During the trial , the court found that the defendant , for the purpose of illegal possession, fabricated the sale of anti-epidemic masks, and used the Internet to defraud multiple victims for a total of RMB 6,235. His behavior violated the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China and constitutes a crime of fraud. Moreover, the defendant, who is now 24 years old, had been jailed for theft twice before and is a repeated offender.
